The Pressure of Uncertainty
People hate change. In most organizations change is a regular occurrence. Change can often dramatically impact your career. One of the byproducts of change is uncertainty. Like turbulence in an aircraft, people have different levels of tolerance for uncertainty in life and at work.
How can you cope with uncertainty at work? Here are some tips:
Remember your goals. It’s important to keep the value you provide your company in focus. It is also important to keep showing people that value. Focus on the fundamentals. Don’t let your guard down. Do your job and do it well.
Make no sudden movements. Uncertainty gives people the feeling of a loss of control. When we feel this way we try to overcompensate. This often causes people to make sudden (often dramatic moves). Don’t do this. Allow some time to pass and allow the situation to settle down before you take significant action.
Avoid gossip. Gossip is often untrue and inflammatory. Don’t participate in it. Don’t spread unconfirmed rumors. Don’t listen to rumors. It will serve only to heighten your anxiety.
Lean on your friends. If you need to vent, talk to friends and relatives who are unrelated to the situation. Collect opinions. Express yourself. Just make certain that you leave it outside the work environment and put it behind you.
It’s difficult to handle changing times. It takes effort to make sure you don’t compound the situation by reacting quickly and without thinking. Take a beat and think about it.
