Passion & Attitude

Posted by Dave Lorenzo - Business Coach

The importance of passion and attitude as critical determinants of career success cannot be overemphasized. When we are pursuing goals that are derived from our deepest loves and dreams, nothing can stop us. What one person sees as an obstacle another views as an opportunity for challenge and growth. I know a few people working on graduate degrees, and two of them in similar circumstances, Andrew and Chris, illustrate clearly what a huge difference passion and attitude make.

Both of these gentleman receive full fellowships and are writing dissertations. They each have few commitments beyond graduate school, and their primary focus is their research and writing. Andrew admits he feels burdened and worried about his work. His motivation is low, and he hasn’t made much progress. He’s uncertain of his choice of field, and he has considered abandoning the program several times.

Chris, on the other hand, is thrilled with his situation. His research fascinates him, and he works diligently every day. He has set concrete goals for himself, and he evaluates his progress regularly. The passion behind his work drives him forward, and it shows in everything he does. The financial support he receives is a tremendous blessing to him, and he makes the most of it.

Both of these men are intelligent, dedicated, and hard working. Chris isn’t necessarily any more gifted than Andrew. The difference is that he knows resolutely what he wants, and he has orchestrated his life to get it. Andrew has followed the path he thinks he should, while Chris has pursued what he always knew he could. Always follow your passions. Maintaining a positive attitude comes naturally when you do.
