The Promise of the Present Day
I’d like to expound upon the idea put forth in yesterday’s money quote, living in the moment. How does it work to your career advantage to take your mind out of yesterday or tomorrow and place yourself solidly in the moment? Let’s begin with a discussion of the past and future, and the opportunities and pitfalls associated with each.
The Past. Think about where you were and what you knew ten years ago. It’s pretty astounding to realize how far you’ve come, isn’t it? We all evolve and change, personally and professionally, so much over time. It’s useful to think about the progress you’ve made and how far you’ve come in achieving your life-long goals. You can use your awareness of these leaps to motivate you toward taking more. You should not, however, waste time mourning losses or beating yourself up about failures and shortcomings of the past. Every experience we endure, no matter how difficult or painful, is another chance for us to learn—about ourselves, other people, what we want, and how best we can achieve it. Nothing that has happened in your past locks you into any kind of future. All your decisions have led you to this place, and it’s a great place. Make the most of it.
The Future. A critical component of Career Intensity is setting overarching objectives for the future. However, the core of Career Intensity is taking action right now to bring those dreams to fruition. However we may long and dream for a future of promise and success, the only way to attain it is to take steps each moment, each day, to move toward it.
The Present. Today is what it’s all about. Whatever has held you back in the past, it doesn’t have to now. Whatever you worry might happen in the future, you can’t be certain of that. Take some action today to move toward your goal. If you want to meet people and network, sign up to attend an event. If taking on more challenging and exciting work is your priority, talk to your supervisor today about doing just that. Anything you want is within reach, if you are willing to invest the effort to make it happen.
