New Look but Same Great Content

Posted by Dave Lorenzo - Business Coach

We have just completed an overhaul of the entire Career Intensity site.

This blog – along with everything else on the site – looks a little different.

We have consolidated all three of my blogs into the Career Intensity Blog.

The web addresses of the other blogs will remain active since there are several great articles on them and they have live links.

We will only be posting new content on this blog as we move forward.

Please take a look around and let me know what you think.  There are several new features and some additional rich content on the site and I’ll be highlighting some of it for you during the upcoming week.

Thanks for your patience while we worked out some of the bugs.

South Florida Business Coaching Means More Time on the Beach

Posted by Dave Lorenzo - Business Coach

Spending more time on the beach may seem like a crazy suggestion even coming from a South Florida Business Coach.

That is exactly the advice I gave to a client yesterday.

I received a call from a stressed out Miami business owner.  She was panicked because she could not see a way out of a particularly thorny problem that had surfaced in her business.  The problem was financial and it involved another person so the degree of tension was high.

After asking her to take a couple of deep breaths I asked her where she thought she did some of her best – and most creative –  thinking.

She responded that she often found that a walk along the beach would often help her clear her head.

I then asked her to share with me all the feelings she had related to this particular problem.  After 90 minutes of conversation, some of it at a high decibel level and some of it through tears, my client was finished.  She had literally relieved herself of all of the emotion associated with the problem.  She said she felt as though a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

It was at that point that I advised her to go home and take a long hot shower, read a book and then go to bed.

I asked her to wake up early the next day and go to the beach to watch the sunrise.   I asked her to sit in a chair and stare at the horizon for an hour before she headed into the office.

She followed my suggestions to the letter.

I spoke with her a short while ago (it is not even 24 hours since she had a meltdown).

She called me to say that she came up with a creative way to solve the problem.  When I asked her what her inspiration was she responded with two things:

  1. Getting the emotion of the situation out of the way – literally beating it to death on the phone last night – allowed her to think about the issue from a purely logical perspective this morning.
  2. Going to the beach – a place she associated with relaxation– stimulated her creativity.

In the end, only time will tell if she has a solid solution to her problem. What’s important is that she feels better about the situation and she realizes that she is in control.

Ultimately I can come to only one conclusion:  Business Coaching in South Florida means that clients get to spend more time on the beach.

Life is Bigger Than Blogging

Posted by Dave Lorenzo - Business Coach

Life happens.

It is how we respond to the things that happen to us that determines what we become.

I need to take the some time off from blogging to manage one of the little curve balls that life has thrown at me.

I’ll be back on line and better than ever on Tuesday, April 10.

Don’t worry.  It’s nothing I can’t handle.

The Need for Speed

Speed Kills.  That’s true in driving and in sales.   The difference is that in sales, speed kills your competition.

If you are the first to return a customer’s call or the first to make an offer to help a customer, you stand a better chance of closing a deal.

Subscribe to the Career Intensity Blog

Each week I cite Back in Skinny Jeans for the excellent description of how to subscribe to a blog with RSS.

Stephanie has given me permission to share her information with all of my readers.

Once again here is her great post on how to subscribe to this blog using RSS.

How to Subscribe to this Blog with RSS

We all have busy lives with very little time. Web surfing is fun but can take hours going to visit every single website and blog you enjoy. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if you could just get all the headlines of the most current stories from all your favorite websites and blogs in one place?

Well now you can, and it is called RSS feed.

The technical acronym for RSS is “Really Simple Syndication”, an XML format that was created to syndicate news, and be a means to share content on the web. Now, to geeks and techies that means something special, but to everyday folks like you and me, what comes to mind is, “Uh, I don’t get it?”

So, to make RSS much easier to understand, you can think of RSS as an acronym for “Really Simple Syndication” or I’m “Ready for Some Stories”. It is a way online for you to get a quick list of the latest story headlines from all your favorite websites and blogs all in one place.

Suppose you have 50 sites and blogs that you like to visit regularly. Going to visit each website and blog everyday could take you hours. With RSS, you can “subscribe” to a website or blog, and get “fed” all the new headlines from all of these 50 sites and blogs in one list, and see what’s going on in minutes instead of hours. What a time saver!

That one place where your RSS list is created is called an RSS Reader, and it gathers all the headlines from all the websites and blogs you have subscribed to. In a moment, I will describe how to get an RSS Reader.

Subscribing to RSS feeds

But first, to “subscribe” to a website or blog’s RSS feed simply means that you are telling that website or blog, “Yes please. Send me your story headlines.” It’s like subscribing to a magazine or newsletter. Instead of getting a magazine or email, you will just get a list of headlines sent to your RSS reader. If the headline looks interesting to you, all you have to do is click on the headline and you’ll be sent to the whole story.

In order to subscribe to a website or blog’s RSS, all you have to do is click on an RSS symbol (that orange box on the right sidebar). You can also click to the text link of the words “ Click Here to Subscribe” on the website or blog.

Typically, you can find these RSS symbols or text links in your browser window, on the sides of the website page, or on the bottom of the page. The publishers of the websites and blogs really want people to subscribe to their RSS, so they will make it very easy for you to find the subscription links.

RSS Readers

Now, because nothing is ever standard on the web like dealing with different operating systems, Mac vs. PC, and different flavored browsers like Internet Explorer, AOL, Safari, and Firefox, the way to get an RSS reader will be dependent on what browser you like to use, and how accessible you’d like your RSS list(s) to be.

Just like there are flavors of web browsers, you may see and hear of different flavors of RSS XML feeders like RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0, and Atom. Again, the flavors are only important if you want to get techie. If you stick to looking for an RSS symbol (again, it’s a bright orange square – it looks like a piece if Ckicklet Gum) you will be fine.

If you’d like your RSS list to be accessible from any computer or mobile device you may have like a PDA, laptop, or cell phone, some popular RSS readers include that option (and almost all are FREE):

MyYahoo
MyMSN
MyAOL
MyGoogle
Bloglines
FeedDemon (this one costs money)
NewsGator (there is a cost for mobile accessibility)
NetVibes
PageFlakes
Shrook (For Mac users. Free trial and then there’s a cost.)
Lektora
Attensa (more for enterprise, and there’s a cost)

As you can see, there are a plethora of choices for you. All are good RSS readers, so your choice will simply come down to the style that appeals most to you.

RSS as Live Bookmarks

Browsers like Safari and Firefox allow you to subscribe to RSS feeds through the browser, and it’s called “live bookmarking”. Currently, you can only do live bookmarking in Internet Explorer if you have IE7.

Once again, thanks to Stephanie from Back In Skinny Jeans for help in describing the RSS subscription process.

Decisions, Decisions

Posted by Dave Lorenzo - Business Coach

Have you ever given any thought to how you make decisions on a day-to-day basis?  Most people don’t think about the process they go through when they make decisions.  Big decisions, small decisions, they all seem to just happen almost automatically.

Think about the last big decision you made.  What process did you follow before you settled on a final answer?  Was it logical?  Did you make lists of “Pros” and “Cons”?  Did you check with a friend or a trusted advisor on the topic?

The first duty of a salesman is to sell oneself.

In other words, the client needs to like you.  If they like you, they may eventually trust you.  If they don’t like you, they will never trust you.  Trust is critical in developing a solid client relationship.

We try to keep this to a minimum.

It looks like the Career Intensity RSS feed to Blog lines readers is not working.  It appears to be a problem on their end.  We have contacted them and they are working to correct the problem.

Thanks for your patience.

Back to Normal

Posted by Dave Lorenzo - Business Coach

Things seem to be back to normal over at MaxBizAdvantage.

Apparently there was a power outage in the neighborhood where our servers are stored.  This knocked everything out.

The outage was a little more than 24 hours.

Again, I apologize for any inconvenience.

Technical Difficulties

Posted by Dave Lorenzo - Business Coach

There are some technical difficulties with the servers that power the MaxBizAdvantage site.  We are not 100 percent certain what the cause of the difficulty is but we are working to get the problem corrected.

The RSS feed also appears to be affected – as The Career Intensity Blog Feed has not been updated for a couple of days.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and I’ll give you an update as soon as I have more information.

Where have I been?

Posted by Dave Lorenzo - Business Coach

Blogging here has been a little light (only about three posts per day or so).  Some of you have asked why.

I am currently wrapping up a big push for my Gallup clients.  I’ve been to a dozen or so cities in the last 45 days and I have a couple more left.

Rest assured that I’ll be back with long posts full of “Business Strategy for Workplace Warriors and Entrepreneurs” by Thanksgiving.

I also have a couple of projects that are about to take off.  Some of you have seen a glimpse of Sales Intensity (a great project I have teed up for 2007).  Others are with me because of the great work Ken Dyck started at Start Up Fever.  Both of these projects are just about ready to jump off the drawing board and into your PC (or Mac).

As the Career Intensity Blog approaches it’s one year anniversary, I am more grateful to all of you than you can ever imagine.

The best is yet to come.  Thanks for reading!
